Chiefs Make Headlines in AFC Showdown—A Bold Playoff Move Shakes Up the Power Rankings!

The Kansas City Chiefs delivered a statement victory on Christmas Day, defeating the Pittsburgh Steelers 29-10 in front of a national audience. The win marked a franchise-record 15th regular-season victory and secured the top seed in the AFC playoffs, guaranteeing the Chiefs a first-round bye and home field advantage throughout the postseason.
“Merry Christmas to all our fans… Good way to celebrate it right here in Pittsburgh,” said Head Coach Andy Reid. “We know that our work isn’t done, for sure. We’re going to celebrate this, but we’re going to get right back on it.”

Fast Start Sets the Tone
Kansas City wasted no time asserting its dominance. On their opening drive, quarterback Patrick Mahomes connected with wide receiver Xavier Worthy for a 7-yard touchdown, setting the tone for the evening. Mahomes followed up with another scoring drive, capped by an 11-yard touchdown pass to Justin Watson, a Pittsburgh native.
A highlight of the second drive was a 49-yard strike to Watson, the Chiefs’ third-longest play from scrimmage this season. By the end of the first quarter, Kansas City held a commanding two-score lead, while Pittsburgh managed just one first down.
Pittsburgh briefly rallied in the second quarter, narrowing the deficit to 14-7 after quarterback Russell Wilson scrambled for a 1-yard touchdown. However, the Chiefs maintained control, outscoring the Steelers 13-3 for the remainder of the game.

Mahomes and Offense Shine
Patrick Mahomes delivered a masterclass performance, completing 29 of 38 passes for 320 yards and three touchdowns. His ability to spread the ball among multiple targets kept Pittsburgh’s defense on its heels.
“I don’t know the exact stats, but it seemed like we spread the ball around really well,” Mahomes said. “Guys made plays, and when you have that many weapons out there, it’s hard for the defense to account for [all of them].”
Xavier Worthy had a breakout game with eight receptions for 79 yards, while tight end Travis Kelce recorded eight catches for 84 yards and a touchdown. Kelce’s score, which came in the fourth quarter, made him the Chiefs’ all-time leader in touchdown receptions, surpassing Hall of Famer Tony Gonzalez.
“What more can you say about him?” Reid said of Kelce. “Every time we come out here, he sets some kind of record.”

Defense Dominates Despite Missing Key Player
The Chiefs’ defense turned in a stellar performance, even without star defensive tackle Chris Jones, who missed the game with a calf injury. The unit recorded five sacks and two takeaways, matching its season high.
Cornerback Trent McDuffie continued his impressive form, forcing a fumble for the third consecutive game. His turnover set up Kelce’s game-sealing touchdown early in the fourth quarter.
Kansas City’s defense stifled the Steelers’ offense, limiting them to their lowest point total of the season. Pittsburgh managed just three points in the second half and struggled to sustain drives.
Perfect Timing for Peak Performance
The Chiefs’ victory capped a grueling stretch of three games in 11 days, during which the team forced 10 turnovers while committing none. Their offense allowed just one sack over that span, highlighting their efficiency on both sides of the ball.
“We feel like we can continue to get better and better, but obviously, we’re playing—especially offensively—our best football at the end of the year,” Mahomes said. “We’re getting guys healthy. We’re excited. This isn’t the end. This is just the beginning. We’ll continue to work to get even better as we go into the playoffs.”

Injuries and What’s Next
The Chiefs’ dominant performance wasn’t without setbacks. Running back Isiah Pacheco exited the game early with a rib injury, leaving his status for the postseason uncertain.
With the AFC’s top seed secured, Kansas City will enjoy extra rest before closing out the regular season against the Denver Broncos. The Chiefs aim to maintain their momentum while preparing for a deep playoff run.
