Novak Djokovic Hopes Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal Will Be Closer to Him Rather Than Distant

Novak Djokovic has candidly shared details about his relationship with tennis legends Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, admitting that their dynamic has often been tense.

A Rollercoaster Relationship

Djokovic, who holds a record 24 Grand Slam titles, more than any player in history, appeared on the cover of a magazine’s February issue and revealed that his relationship with Federer and Nadal has been a “rollercoaster.”

“Oh, I don’t see them much. But the rivalry among the three of us is eternal. It’s something that has left an incredible mark and legacy on the sport. It’s something that will last forever. I’m very proud and happy to be part of that group,” Djokovic, 37, said.

Rivalry Fuels Professional Growth

The tennis champion, who won his first Olympic gold medal at the Paris Summer Games last year, explained that while the trio’s rivalry has fueled his professional career, off the court, he hasn’t been particularly close with the other Grand Slam champions.

“Privately, the relationship has been up and down. I’ve always tried to be respectful and friendly with them off the court. But I wasn’t accepted right away because I stepped onto the court and showed confidence that I wanted to win. I don’t think they liked that in the early days,” Djokovic admitted. “Because of that confidence, maybe they distanced themselves from me even more. And that’s okay. I accepted it. I understood the message—I got that we were rivals and nothing else,” he added.

Friendship on Tour is Challenging

Djokovic continued: “Honestly, it’s very difficult to be friends on tour. If you’re the biggest rivals, constantly competing and ranked as number one, two, and three in the world, it’s hard to expect that you’d be close, go out for dinner, or spend time with each other’s families. It’s just not realistic, to be honest.”

Hopes for Future Connection

Despite the current distance, Djokovic expressed hope that one day he, Federer, and Nadal could become closer.

“I truly want to connect with those guys on a deeper level. I really do. Whether that happens or not, I don’t know if they share the same desire or goodwill. But I do want it,” Djokovic stated.

Andy Murray Joins Djokovic’s Team

In addition, Andy Murray, a former rival of Djokovic, announced in November that he would join Djokovic’s team during the off-season to help the Serbian prepare for the Australian Open.

“I’m really excited about this and looking forward to being on the same side of the net with Novak for a change, helping him achieve his goals,” Murray, 37, shared.
