49ers Eyeing Trent Williams’ Successor in 2025 NFL Draft
The San Francisco 49ers, holding the 11th overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, have a prime opportunity to address a critical need on their offensive line. With Trent Williams, one of the best left tackles in the game, nearing the twilight of his career, the team is exploring potential successors.
Trent Williams’ Status
As the 2025 season approaches, the 37-year-old Trent Williams remains a vital part of the 49ers’ lineup. Despite missing the final seven games of the 2024 season due to an ankle injury, the team remains optimistic about his return. General Manager John Lynch expressed confidence in Williams’ recovery and ongoing commitment:
“Trent’s mindset is where it always is, and he’s still very interested in being the great player that he is. He’s got a lot left in the tank.”
Still, the need to plan for life after Williams is clear, and many fans hope the 49ers will invest their top draft pick in securing his replacement.
Jonah Savaiinaea: The Top Contender
In his latest mock draft, Walter Cherepinsky of Walter Football has projected the 49ers to select Jonah Savaiinaea, an offensive tackle from Arizona. Known for his versatility and athleticism, Savaiinaea is viewed as an ideal fit for the 49ers.
“The 49ers desperately need offensive line help,” Cherepinsky wrote. “Jonah is a quick blocker with plus athleticism.”
Savaiinaea’s collegiate performance adds to his appeal. In 2024, he was the highest-graded offensive lineman for the Arizona Wildcats, achieving an overall grade of 74.3 from Pro Football Focus. His pass-blocking was particularly notable, with an impressive grade of 83.7. Over 478 pass-blocking snaps, he allowed just four sacks and 15 pressures.
Why Savaiinaea Fits the 49ers’ Vision
Standing at 6-foot-5 and over 330 pounds, Savaiinaea’s physical attributes mirror those of Trent Williams. He also demonstrated versatility by playing both left tackle and right tackle in 2024, logging 345 and 364 snaps, respectively. His ability to adapt to multiple positions could make him a key asset, capable of competing for a starting role or stepping in when Williams eventually retires.
Looking Ahead
As the draft approaches, all eyes are on how the 49ers will use their first-round pick. With a talented prospect like Jonah Savaiinaea in the mix, the franchise has a chance to ensure its offensive line remains strong for years to come.
