Novak Djokovic Overcomes Health Issues in Round 3
Despite experiencing breathing problems and requiring an inhaler, Novak Djokovic delivered an impressive performance to defeat Tomas Machac 6-1, 6-4, 6-4 in the third round of the Australian Open 2025.
Djokovic Faces Breathing Challenges During the Match
Throughout the first two sets, Djokovic showed visible signs of discomfort. He frequently bent over, clutched his stomach, and breathed heavily, with his face reflecting clear distress. After the first three games of the second set, Djokovic called for medical assistance.
“This is very unusual,” remarked former player John Millman on Nine. “He needs a doctor, not just a physiotherapist.”
A doctor applied a medical tape around Djokovic’s back and ribs, administered medication, and provided an inhaler to help alleviate his symptoms. At the time, Djokovic was leading 6-1, 1-2. Once back on the court, Djokovic immediately broke his opponent’s serve and went on to secure victory in straight sets. This marked the first time in the tournament that Djokovic completed a match in just three sets.
Commentary on Djokovic’s Performance
Despite his health challenges, Djokovic maintained a high level of play. Millman added:
“Apart from the occasional discomfort between points, Djokovic played as if he had no issues at all. He’s still at the top of his game, even if his physical condition seems challenging.”
Millman speculated that Djokovic may experience difficulty during deep breaths but doesn’t feel as affected during play due to his faster breathing rhythm.
Djokovic Eyes 11th Australian Open Title
After the match, Djokovic sent air kisses to the crowd at Rod Laver Arena, signaling his determination to claim an 11th Australian Open title, despite ongoing health concerns.
This isn’t the first time Djokovic has overcome physical issues at the Australian Open. In 2021, he won the title despite suffering an abdominal muscle strain in the third round. Two years later, he secured his 10th title while battling a 3 cm hamstring tear throughout the tournament.
Next Opponent in Round 4
In the fourth round, Djokovic is set to face 24th seed Jiri Ledecka in two days. Should he advance, a potential quarterfinal clash against Carlos Alcaraz awaits. With his current form and resilience, Djokovic remains a strong contender for this year’s championship.
