Billionaire Elon Musk publicly supported Novak Djokovic, advising the Serbian tennis star to communicate directly with fans instead of relying on traditional media.
“It’s much better to speak directly to the public rather than through the negative filter of traditional media,” Musk wrote on X, the platform he owns, tagging Djokovic’s account.
Djokovic responded in agreement, replying: “Indeed,” with an emoji expressing support.
The Controversial Incident
Musk’s remarks came shortly after Djokovic refused to participate in a post-match interview with Channel 9 following his fourth-round victory at the Australian Open. In that match, Djokovic defeated Jiri Lehecka with a score of 6-3, 6-4, 7-6(4).
The refusal stemmed from an incident where Channel 9 journalist Tony Jones mocked Djokovic and Serbian fans during a live broadcast. Jones imitated the crowd’s chants, singing lines such as:
“Novak is overrated, Novak is washed up, get him out of here,” referencing Djokovic’s deportation from Australia three years ago over his refusal to take the Covid-19 vaccine.
After his win on January 19 at Rod Laver Arena, Djokovic briefly thanked the crowd before leaving without engaging in the usual post-match interview.
Apologies and Backlash
Under pressure from Djokovic and public criticism, Channel 9 and Tony Jones issued a public apology on Monday, January 20. Djokovic accepted the apology and announced he would resume participation in future interviews.
However, Jones is now facing intense backlash from the tennis community. Prominent tennis figures have openly criticized him:
- Nick Kyrgios called Jones a “clown” and expressed surprise that he still had a job.
- Victoria Azarenka stated that Jones’ remarks were insulting to a player who has achieved everything in tennis.
- Boris Becker, Djokovic’s former coach, wrote: “This is troubling behavior from a TV journalist. Is he still employed?”
Other Opinions
Darren Cahill, coach of world No. 1 Jannik Sinner and an Australian himself, noted that Tony Jones has a reputation for humor and satire but admitted his comments this time were inappropriate. Cahill commented:
“Jones has been in this industry for a long time. He likely intended to be humorous, but it wasn’t the right moment. Novak’s reaction is completely understandable.”
Former world No. 4 James Blake added that Jones should have apologized sooner, telling ESPN:
“Djokovic always sticks to his principles. In this case, he was entirely justified. Jones deserves to apologize, and this behavior warrants dismissal.”
Channel 9’s Role
Channel 9, part of the Nine Network, is one of Australia’s three largest commercial TV networks. The channel holds exclusive broadcasting rights for the 2025 Australian Open, covering both qualifying matches and junior tournaments. The network features prominent tennis stars like Jim Courier, John McEnroe, Lleyton Hewitt, and Jelena Dokic as commentators.
Djokovic – A Tennis Legend
Djokovic is set to face Carlos Alcaraz in the quarterfinals on January 21. This marks his 61st Grand Slam quarterfinal appearance, an unmatched record in tennis history.
