Novak Djokovic does not accept the apology

After announcing a shocking boycott of interviews with Channel Nine, Serbian tennis star Novak Djokovic received a public apology from veteran sports commentator Tony Jones of the network.

Controversial Remarks from Tony Jones
During a live broadcast, Tony Jones made inappropriate comments about Djokovic and his Serbian fan base. His statement, including the phrase “kick him out”, drew parallels to Djokovic’s deportation from Australia in 2021 due to COVID-19 vaccination issues, sparking outrage.

Jones specifically said: “Novak is overrated. Novak is past his prime. Novak, kick him out… Oh, it’s lucky they didn’t hear me say that.”

These remarks not only angered Djokovic but also infuriated his Serbian supporters. In a press conference after advancing to the Australian Open quarterfinals, Djokovic called the comments “disrespectful” and expressed his disappointment.

Apology and Djokovic’s Reaction
On Monday, Tony Jones publicly apologized on Channel Nine, revealing that he had already extended an apology to Djokovic and his fans two days earlier.

“I could make excuses, but my words clearly touched on a sensitive moment in Novak’s career. I understand why he was offended, and I sincerely apologize for that,” Jones said.

He explained that his comments were initially meant to be “humorous”, in line with the tone of other sports programs he’s worked on. However, he admitted that his words had crossed the line and hurt not only Djokovic but also his passionate Serbian fan base.
“If I could take it back, I would never have said that. I truly apologize to Novak and the fans who were affected by my words.”

Channel Nine and Public Response
Channel Nine also issued an official apology on Monday afternoon:
“Nine apologizes to Novak Djokovic for any offense caused by recent comments made during the broadcast. We had no intention of offending Novak or his fans and look forward to following his journey at the Australian Open.”

However, many fans on social media have called for stronger action from the network, with some demanding Tony Jones be dismissed. Critics labeled the apology as “too little, too late.”

Djokovic’s Future with Channel Nine
Djokovic has yet to officially respond to the apologies from Tony Jones and Channel Nine. On Sunday, he hinted at the possibility of continuing or ending his boycott of the network’s interviews.

Despite the controversy, Djokovic remains focused on his performance on the court, hoping that the incident won’t overshadow his pursuit of success at the Australian Open.
