Ryan Garcia is making his comeback after a challenging year. The 26-year-old boxing sensation, currently suspended for testing positive for a banned substance, is stepping into the ring for an exhibition match against Japanese kickboxing star Rukiya Anpo on December 30 in Tokyo. While it’s not an official fight, this event will help Garcia stay sharp as he prepares for a full return to professional boxing in 2025.

Moving Past Controversy

Garcia’s last fight, a controversial matchup against Devin Haney, initially ended with a majority decision win. However, after a failed drug test, the result was overturned to a no contest, and Haney followed up with a lawsuit against Garcia for battery. Despite these setbacks, Golden Boy Promotions president Eric Gomez says Garcia has been using his suspension to reflect, grow, and prepare for the future.

“This exhibition fight has been in the works for a while. It’s a great opportunity for Ryan to stay active and show off his skills to fans in Japan,” Gomez shared. “It’s not an official bout, but it’s an important step for him to stay in shape and keep his name in the conversation.”

Gomez also emphasized that Garcia is in a much better place now. Leading up to the Haney fight, Garcia struggled with weight management and erratic social media behavior, raising concerns about his focus. “He’s matured a lot,” Gomez said. “This break has allowed him to prioritize his family, his training, and his long-term goals.”

What’s Next for Ryan Garcia?

Garcia will be eligible to return to professional boxing on April 20, 2025, and fans are already buzzing about potential opponents. A rematch with Devin Haney is on the table, but Gomez hinted at the possibility of Garcia moving up to the 154-pound division.

“Ryan has the frame to compete at 154 pounds,” Gomez explained. “He’s a big kid, and making 140 pounds has always been a challenge. While a tune-up fight would be ideal, knowing Ryan, he’ll want to face a top contender right away.”

The Tokyo exhibition is more than just a stay-busy fight. It’s a chance for Garcia to show he’s ready for the next chapter in his career. With his suspension nearing its end, the stage is set for a highly anticipated comeback that could redefine his place in the boxing world.

For fans, the countdown is on. Can Ryan Garcia rise above the challenges and reclaim his spot as one of boxing’s brightest stars? All eyes are on him as he works toward his ultimate return to glory.
