LeBron James spent two days in disbelief after learning that the Los Angeles Lakers had traded Anthony Davis, his teammate and close friend of more than five years. As the NBA’s all-time leading scorer, James has seen nearly everything in his 22-season career—but this trade took him by surprise. Now, he is adjusting to the reality of forming a new dynamic duo with Luka Dončić, a player he has long admired.

“Luka has been my favorite player in the NBA for a while now,” James said Tuesday night after leading the Lakers to a dominant win over the Clippers. “I’ve always tried to play the game the right way and inspire the next generation. Luka happens to be one of them, and now we’re teammates. So it’ll be a very seamless transition.”

From Disbelief to Acceptance

James first heard about the blockbuster trade on Saturday night while having dinner with his family in New York. Like many fans and analysts, he initially dismissed it as a hoax.

“My emotions were all over the place,” James admitted. “The first time I heard it, I thought it was fake. I thought people were just messing around. But then AD FaceTimed me, and we talked for a while. Even after that, it didn’t seem real. It wasn’t until I saw Luka today and then watched a clip of AD at the Dallas shootaround that it finally hit me—this is real.”

For a veteran who has spent more than two decades in the NBA, this trade was something new.

“I thought I had seen everything in this league,” James said. “But I’ve never experienced something like this. It was shocking when I first heard the news, but at the end of the day, I understand the business of basketball.”

Committed to the Lakers Despite Roster Shakeup

With the NBA trade deadline looming, many speculated whether James would seek a trade himself. However, the 40-year-old made it clear that he remains committed to the Lakers, even in the wake of Davis’ departure.

When asked whether he was concerned about the team shifting its focus to Dončić and a younger core, James dismissed the idea.

“What’s wrong with that?” he responded. “If I had concerns, I would’ve waived my no-trade clause and left. But I’m here. I’m committed to the Lakers organization. My job now is to help Luka and Maxi transition as smoothly as possible.”

Luka Dončić Joins Lakers, Sparks Excitement

Dončić formally joined the Lakers on Tuesday, watching from the bench at Intuit Dome while speaking at length with James. The Slovenian superstar, widely regarded as one of the NBA’s most talented young players, is still adjusting to the move but expressed enthusiasm about joining one of basketball’s most storied franchises.

Dončić’s arrival has also sparked excitement around Los Angeles. Lakers head coach JJ Redick and Clippers head coach Tyronn Lue both believe James and Dončić will thrive together.

“I’m confident we’ll figure out how to blend their talents in a positive way,” Redick said.

While Dončić didn’t make his Lakers debut Tuesday night, he was already the center of attention at the arena. The blockbuster trade sent Anthony Davis and Max Christie to the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for Dončić, Maxi Kleber, and Markieff Morris.

Lue, who coached James to a championship in Cleveland alongside Kyrie Irving, dismissed concerns that Dončić and James—both ball-dominant players—would struggle to coexist.

“They’re not right,” Lue said, referring to critics like Charles Barkley and Paul Pierce. “It’ll work. When you have LeBron, who’s been the best player in the league for the last 15 years, and Luka—who’s a top-three, top-five player—they’ll figure it out. LeBron can play with anybody.”

Lue added that Redick will likely stagger their minutes, similar to how he managed James and Irving in Cleveland, ensuring both stars can thrive before closing games together.

Redick and Dončić’s History Could Help Their Chemistry

Redick and Dončić were briefly teammates in Dallas during the final stretch of Redick’s playing career in 2021. Since then, the two have maintained a friendship, with Dončić even appearing on Redick’s podcast.

“We have mutual respect,” Redick said. “Now, we have to develop a working relationship as player and coach, and we’re both committed to making that happen.”

Emotional Goodbye for Lakers Players

While James and Dončić are ready to move forward, the trade has been an emotional adjustment for other Lakers players.

“The last couple of days have been tough,” Austin Reaves admitted. “I had an empty pit in my stomach. You create real bonds with teammates, and then out of nowhere, they’re on a different team.”

Even outside the basketball world, Dončić’s move to Los Angeles is making waves. LA Kings captain Anže Kopitar, one of Slovenia’s most famous athletes, expressed excitement about Dončić’s arrival.

“He’s obviously a superstar, not just in Slovenia, but around the world,” Kopitar said. “For our country, this is a big deal. It’s great to have him here.”

What’s Next for the New-Look Lakers?

As the dust settles from one of the most shocking trades in recent memory, all eyes will be on how James and Dončić mesh on the court. The Lakers are betting big on this new partnership, and while losing Davis was a major shakeup, the potential of a LeBron-Dončić duo has fans eager to see what’s next.

With both superstars eager to make it work, the Lakers’ championship aspirations remain very much alive.
