The world of Formula 1 is abuzz with excitement as Cadillac F1, backed by General Motors, secures a place on the grid for the 2026 season. Sky F1 pundit Martin Brundle, an advocate for grid expansion, has shared his enthusiasm for the entry, which promises to bring fresh talent and another major manufacturer to the sport.

Cadillac F1’s Path to Approval

The FIA announced an “agreement in principle” for Cadillac F1’s entry, marking a significant milestone for the team. This decision comes after a reshuffle in September 2024, where team owner Michael Andretti stepped back from daily operations, allowing General Motors to take the lead.

The legendary Mario Andretti, 1978 F1 World Champion, will play a key role as a non-executive director, adding his expertise and gravitas to the project.

Brundle Welcomes the Expansion

Brundle, a former F1 driver and current commentator, has long supported expanding the F1 grid to accommodate more drivers. Taking to social media, he expressed his approval:

“With my F1 fan and TV commentator hats on, I’m really pleased to see another team and two more drivers on the grid, and another manufacturer joining.”

Cadillac’s Ambitious Roadmap

General Motors has already committed to becoming an F1 engine supplier starting in 2028, but the team plans to compete with customer engines during their initial seasons in 2026 and 2027. Talks are reportedly underway with Ferrari to supply engines for their debut.

Mario Andretti confirmed:

“The process is on right now. We’ll be on the grid in 2026 and Cadillac will be part of it in every way. The development of the power unit will continue.”

While Ferrari remains the preferred supplier, final agreements are yet to be made.

Driver Lineup Plans

Cadillac F1 aims to strike a balance in their driver lineup by pairing an experienced competitor with an emerging American talent. IndyCar star Colton Herta is among the top candidates, aligning with the team’s commitment to featuring a U.S. driver.

Andretti shared the team’s vision:

“The play at the beginning would be to have one experienced driver — nationality doesn’t matter — and then a young American talent.”

A Positive Outlook for F1

The addition of Cadillac F1 is a significant step for the sport, offering more opportunities for talented drivers and introducing a prominent U.S. manufacturer to the grid. With 2026 shaping up to be a transformative year for F1, fans and experts alike are eagerly awaiting Cadillac’s debut and its impact on the sport.
