Mikey Musumeci’s dreams: Clean steroids out of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with UFC’s support
Mikey Musumeci, a top-tier Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) practitioner, has taken a bold step by partnering with the UFC. With a vision to professionalize grappling, Musumeci is tackling widespread issues like steroid use and unstable ethics in the sport. His recent exclusive deal with the UFC marks the beginning of a new era for BJJ.
Leading the Push for Professionalism in Grappling
After years of competing in the ONE Championship, Mikey Musumeci joined the UFC as its first exclusive Brazilian jiu-jitsu athlete. For him, this move isn’t just about competition—it’s about elevating grappling into a professional, ethical sport.
“I feel like what I’m doing right now is the most important thing for grappling,” Musumeci explained during UFC 310 media day. “A lot of right now is very unstable. There are horrible ethics and morals, and I hope now that with the UFC, we can change that and make it a professional sport.”
Musumeci criticized the lack of structure in BJJ and highlighted the need for a stable platform with drug testing, championship belts, and long-term career opportunities for athletes. He hopes the UFC’s global influence will push these changes forward.
Confronting Steroid Abuse in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
One of Musumeci’s main goals is to address the rampant use of performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) in jiu-jitsu. He estimates that “99 percent” of practitioners are on steroids—a fact he finds deeply troubling.
“People not on steroids—that’s pretty much what I would say [about who should join UFC],” Musumeci remarked. “They probably need a year or six months to adjust. Maybe Darwinism will take care of it.”
Although he refrained from naming specific competitors, Musumeci’s critique highlights the urgent need for reform. By advocating for stricter drug policies and clean competition, he aims to create a healthier and more ethical environment for current and future athletes.
UFC’s Role in Shaping the Future of Grappling
Musumeci sees the UFC as the perfect partner to transform Brazilian jiu-jitsu into a professional sport. With its global reputation and established structure, the UFC is well-positioned to lead this evolution.
“They want to make this professional also,” Musumeci stated. “We’ve been amateurs, but now UFC is starting something professional. I’m so blessed they’re putting effort into jiu-jitsu to change it.”
A Clean, Professional Future for Jiu-Jitsu
Mikey Musumeci’s collaboration with the UFC is a transformative step for Brazilian jiu-jitsu. By advocating for drug-free competition, ethical practices, and professional stability, Musumeci is paving the way for the sport’s future.
“What does that look like to me?” he asked. “That looks like we have belts, drug testing, and stability. I want to completely eliminate steroids and change this sport.”
While Musumeci has personal goals, including a possible transition to MMA, his primary mission is to reshape the culture of jiu-jitsu. With the UFC’s backing, he believes grappling can evolve into a respected, clean, and truly professional sport.
