Cruz Looks to Make a Statement at 147 Pounds

Welterweight boxer Kent Cruz, a native of Saint Louis, is gearing up for a pivotal showdown at 147 pounds against Dominican veteran Braulio Rodriguez on Saturday at the Casa Loma Ballroom. Cruz, who enters this fight with a 16-1-3 record, is determined to prove that his new weight class marks a significant transformation in both his physique and performance.

In the past, Cruz struggled to make weight at lower divisions, a challenge that he believes hampered his overall performance. Now, as he steps up to welterweight, Cruz feels stronger and more focused on his game plan. “This is going to be a new and improved Cruz at 147,” he says. “Making weight was always a big factor in my past performances. Now, I can focus on being the best version of myself in the ring.”

Fresh Management and a New Weight Class Fuel Cruz’s Confidence

Cruz’s decision to move up in weight is accompanied by a fresh start in his career. Recently, he partnered with Fighters First Management, where he will be guided by former Main Events matchmaker Jolene Mizzone. This change, along with his transition to welterweight, represents a clean slate for the boxer. Cruz also trains under the guidance of coach Jose Ponce in Saint Louis, a team he believes will help him reach his full potential.

Reflecting on his journey, Cruz acknowledges that inactivity has been a major hurdle in his career. He spent the last four years as a free agent, waiting for the right calls, but he’s now ready to push forward. “That time off helped me regroup, and I’m ready to push forward at welterweight,” Cruz explains. “Jolene is a perfect fit, and she’s going to keep me busy and get me the right fights to eventually get to a world title.”

Rodriguez as a Stepping Stone to Bigger Fights

Cruz’s opponent, Braulio Rodriguez, brings a wealth of experience to the table with a record of 20-11, including 17 KOs. Rodriguez has faced top fighters like Ryan Garcia, Ashton Sylve, and Christopher “Pitufo” Diaz, making him a solid test for Cruz at 147. Cruz respects Rodriguez’s experience but is confident his skills and power will shine through.

“Rodriguez is a solid opponent and will be a good test for me,” Cruz notes. “I feel strong at this weight, and I’m confident my power will carry over well.” As Cruz returns to his hometown for the first time in years to fight in front of his friends and family, he’s determined to put on a spectacular performance. “I want to look spectacular in this fight and keep moving toward bigger opportunities,” Cruz says.

With his management team, new weight class, and renewed focus, Kent Cruz is primed for a breakout moment in the welterweight division.
