Just two months before the highly anticipated 4 Nations Face-Off, Canada’s dynamic duo from the Colorado Avalanche—Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar—are ready to leave their mark on the tournament.

The Colorado Connection: MacKinnon and Makar Lead Team Canada

Both stars have already proven their dominance in the NHL. MacKinnon is currently leading the league in scoring with 50 points (13 goals, 37 assists), while Makar tops all defensemen with 37 points (9 goals, 28 assists). As the event approaches, set to take place February 12–20 in Montreal and Boston, their seamless chemistry with the Avalanche could give Team Canada a crucial edge.

In the NHL, the two consistently create highlight reel plays, often connecting on blind passes and power-play opportunities. Their familiarity will be a significant asset in a short tournament like the 4 Nations Face-Off, where teams will have only a handful of practices before games begin. Both MacKinnon and Makar are eager to translate their Avalanche success onto the international stage.

Unmatched Chemistry

The pair recently shared their excitement for the tournament in an interview with NHL.com. Makar admitted he’s still in awe of MacKinnon’s abilities, including his ninth career five-point game earlier this season in a 6-2 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins.

“Every night, it’s something new,” Makar, 26, said. “The way he works hard every game and adjusts his play is truly remarkable. It’s exciting to see his growth every day.”

Both players have received numerous accolades. In the 2021-22 season, Makar won the James Norris Trophy as the NHL’s best defenseman and the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP, helping Colorado to a Stanley Cup victory. Meanwhile, MacKinnon had a career-best 140-point season in 2023-24 (51 goals, 89 assists), earning the Hart Trophy as the NHL’s MVP.

Joining them on Team Canada will be Avalanche teammate Devon Toews, further enhancing their advantage.

“I’m thrilled,” MacKinnon said. “Cale and I know each other’s games so well, especially on the power play and at 5-on-5. That familiarity will be a huge help.”

MacKinnon is also eager to potentially line up with fellow Nova Scotians Sidney Crosby and Brad Marchand. “We know each other really well,” he said. “If we play together, I’ll stick to my style, and Sid’s intelligence will complement that perfectly.”

Sweden’s Stars: Karlsson and Carlsson

Erik Karlsson Eyes Chemistry with Nylander

At 34 years old, Erik Karlsson of the Pittsburgh Penguins is still at the top of his game, with 19 points (2 goals, 17 assists) this season. For the tournament, he’s most excited about the chance to play alongside Toronto’s William Nylander, whom he’s never previously teamed up with.

“Willy would be a fascinating teammate,” Karlsson said. “His qualities are incredible, and playing with him will be a new challenge.”

Karlsson also looks forward to reuniting with Victor Hedman of the Tampa Bay Lightning. The two previously played together at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey and could potentially team up again for the 2026 Milan-Cortina Olympics.

“It’s always great to play with Victor,” Karlsson said. “We haven’t had many chances to do so, but I hope we’ll have more opportunities in the future.”

Leo Carlsson: Sweden’s Rising Star

At just 19, Leo Carlsson of the Anaheim Ducks is the youngest member of Sweden’s roster. The No. 2 pick in the 2023 NHL Draft has impressed in his rookie season with 11 points (6 goals, 5 assists) in 23 games.

“I didn’t expect this,” Carlsson said of making the team. “It’s such an honor to play with the best players in our country.”

Carlsson has already represented Sweden at the 2023 IIHF World Championship, where he played alongside Lucas Raymond of the Detroit Red Wings, another member of the 4 Nations squad.

Carlsson is especially excited to share the locker room with NHL stars like Hedman, Karlsson, and Nylander, as well as Filip Forsberg of the Nashville Predators.

“I can’t wait to meet everyone,” Carlsson said. “This is going to be an incredible experience.”

A Showcase of Talent

From Canada’s Colorado Connection to Sweden’s mix of veteran experience and youthful energy, the 4 Nations Face-Off promises to be a thrilling preview of international hockey’s elite talent. Fans can look forward to seeing these stars shine on one of hockey’s biggest stages.
