A Message from Pitt Volleyball Student Athlete, Rachel Fairbanks
Early Days at the University of Pittsburgh
As a senior at the University of Pittsburgh, reflecting on my time here fills me with immense gratitude. From my initial days of uncertainty, I’ve grown and learned so much. This growth isn’t solely my own doing but is largely thanks to the support and guidance of the incredible people around me.
Support from Mentors
My development is a direct result of the phenomenal mentors, coaches, professors, teammates, family, and friends who have stood by me throughout this journey. I couldn’t have achieved what I have without their encouragement. Each of them has played a role in shaping my path, and for that I am truly thankful.
Pitt Volleyball: A Special Program
Pitt Volleyball is a remarkable program led by an outstanding coaching staff. Since head coach Dan Fisher joined, the team has continued to reach new heights. Under his leadership, we’ve achieved more significant milestones each year, inspiring all of us to give our best.
Memorable Moments from My Freshman Year
In my four years at Pitt, we’ve made history. During my freshman year, we defeated Purdue to make the program’s first-ever NCAA Final Four appearance. That match and the bond with my teammates hold a special place in my heart. These experiences have shaped who I am today.
Playing Alongside Incredible Athletes
Thanks to an additional year of eligibility, I had the privilege to play alongside phenomenal women like Kayla Lund, Chinaza Ndee, Kylee Levers, and Leketor Member-Meneh. The determination of these veteran players and the memories of breaking historical records with them will always remain dear to me.
Another Unforgettable Season
My sophomore year was another season to remember. We became ACC champions for the fourth time in the program’s history. As the postseason approached, we were ready. This time, the NCAA quarterfinals were hosted in Wisconsin, where we faced the defending national champion.
Emotions Facing Wisconsin
The venue wasn’t our beloved Fitzgerald Field House but the packed UW Field House, with fervent Wisconsin fans cheering loudly. After a gruelling five-set match, we emerged victorious, leaving us with indescribable emotions. It was truly a remarkable season, filled with experiences and people who changed my life.
Success in the Past Season
Last year, from preseason play to the conference tournament, we claimed another ACC title. When the Selection Show confirmed Pitt would host up until the national semifinals, it gave us extra motivation and determination to succeed.
A Thrilling Comeback Victory
After advancing through the early rounds, we faced Louisville at Fitzgerald Field House in a match to reach the Final Four. Starting poorly, we lost the first two sets, needing a comeback to stay in the game. With the crowd’s overwhelming support, we rallied back and secured a thrilling victory over the Cardinals.
Historic Achievements in 2024
This season, we made history again by earning our first-ever AVCA No. 1 ranking. Thanks to the unwavering support of Pittsburgh and Pitt volleyball fans, we sold out the Petersen Events Centre, setting a new program attendance record with 11,800 cheering supporters.
Life Lessons from Pitt
The life lessons and memories I’ve gained from Pitt will endure far beyond my time here. I will forever be grateful to my teammates, coaches, and friends; the fans, sponsors, cheer squad, and band; as well as the Pittsburgh community for always being there for us.
My journey at the University of Pittsburgh wasn’t just about volleyball; it was about personal growth, lifelong friendships, and unforgettable memories. I hope the lessons and experiences I’ve gained here will accompany me for the rest of my life. Thank you to everyone who made my time at Pitt so remarkable!
