Astros Remain Optimistic About Re-signing Alex Bregman
Despite major offseason moves, including the acquisition of Isaac Paredes via trade and Christian Walker through free agency, the Houston Astros have not closed the door on the possibility of re-signing Alex Bregman, a key figure in the team’s recent success. Astros general manager Dana Brown acknowledged the team’s continued interest in bringing Bregman back, describing the situation as “cracked” but admitted it was a “long shot.”
Bregman, the standout third baseman, remains available on the free-agent market despite the Astros’ busy winter. In fact, the team was caught off guard that Bregman is still a free agent, as early offseason moves like the trade for Isaac Paredes and the signing of Christian Walker seemed to suggest the team was moving in a different direction. However, Astros management has maintained communication with Bregman and has not ruled out the possibility of a reunion.
Astros’ Offer and Challenges of Re-signing Bregman
Earlier in the offseason, the Astros extended a six-year, $156 million offer to Bregman, which remains on the table. Although the team has already made substantial roster changes, including adding Paredes and Walker, Astros manager Joe Espada expressed optimism about Bregman’s return. He stated, “I’m still optimistic. He’s still out there, he’s still available. Would love to have him back.”
However, bringing Bregman back would not be without its challenges. The Astros have discussed potential infield changes, including moving second baseman Jose Altuve to left field, to make room for Bregman at third base. The team is also aware that re-signing Bregman would likely require shedding some payroll to stay under MLB’s luxury tax threshold, though Dana Brown indicated that there are limited options for payroll cuts.
Astros’ Long-Term Commitment to Bregman
Despite the complexities, the Astros are still very much interested in Bregman’s return. Bregman has been a core player for the Astros during their successful run, contributing to two World Series titles (2017 and 2022). In 2024, Bregman posted impressive stats with a .260 batting average, 26 home runs, 75 RBIs, and won the Gold Glove Award at third base. Beyond his on-field contributions, Bregman is regarded as one of the team’s most significant leaders in the clubhouse.
If Bregman re-signs, it would not only strengthen the Astros’ infield but could also significantly impact the overall dynamic of the team as they pursue another championship. However, if Bregman chooses to sign elsewhere, the Astros will have to adjust and move forward with their current roster.
Astros’ Hope for a Reunion with Bregman
Despite the logistical hurdles and uncertainty surrounding his future, Astros fans and players alike are hopeful for a reunion with Alex Bregman. As Jose Altuve stated, “He’s a big part of our team. He’s definitely going to make this team better if he stays, so we’re really praying and hoping he stays.”
With the offseason still ongoing, the Astros will continue to weigh their options and explore the possibility of re-signing Alex Bregman, one of their most important players in recent years.
