The Cleveland chapter of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America (BBWAA) has recognized two exceptional players for their outstanding performances and contributions during the 2024 season. Emmanuel Clase and Austin Hedges were celebrated for their leadership on and off the field, further cementing their importance to the Cleveland Guardians.

Emmanuel Clase Claims Bob Feller Man of the Year Award

Emmanuel Clase earned the prestigious Bob Feller Man of the Year Award, outshining teammates José Ramírez and Steven Kwan. Clase’s dominance as a closer was unmatched this season, marking a historic year for the reliever. His performance was remarkable, finishing in the top three of the AL Cy Young voting, a feat no reliever had achieved since 2008. With a franchise-record 39 saves and a 0.61 ERA over 74 1/3 innings, Clase was a key factor in the team’s success.

Clase’s Consistency Key to Guardians’ Success

Clase’s efficiency on the mound was critical to the Guardians’ ability to maintain a perfect 82-0 record in games where they entered the ninth inning with a lead. His performance extended to the All-Star Game, where he secured a save. The historic nature of Clase’s season redefined the expectations for relievers in Cleveland and throughout the league.

Austin Hedges Wins Frank Gibbons-Steve Olin Good Guy Award

Austin Hedges was honored with the Frank Gibbons-Steve Olin Good Guy Award, which recognizes players for their professionalism and leadership. Hedges demonstrated a steadfast commitment to team values, providing a positive influence in the clubhouse. His ability to build strong relationships with the media and support his teammates was pivotal for the young Guardians team.

Hedges’ Leadership Shines in Guardians’ 2024 Campaign

Hedges consistently exhibited leadership both on and off the field, taking responsibility for difficult moments and encouraging his teammates during tough times. His ability to rally the team, coupled with his defensive prowess, made him an invaluable asset in 2024. Despite a tiebreaker vote with Matthew Boyd, Hedges’ genuine nature and team-first mentality earned him the recognition.

Guardians’ Bright Future with Clase and Hedges

These two prestigious awards highlight the importance of not only athletic performance but also leadership and character in creating a successful baseball team. Clase’s dominance on the mound and Hedges’ clubhouse leadership were key to Cleveland’s American League Championship Series appearance. As the Guardians prepare for 2025, they can rely on these players’ qualities to build a competitive future.
