The 2024 season was a major disappointment for the Indianapolis Colts, prompting management to confirm that general manager Chris Ballard and head coach Shane Steichen would remain in place. Despite the underwhelming campaign, Colts Pro Bowler Zaire Franklin remains optimistic about the team’s future, believing that Indianapolis could be an attractive destination for free agents—especially with the recent coaching staff changes.

Lou Anarumo’s Impact on the Colts’ Defense
One of the biggest reasons Franklin believes in the Colts‘ potential is the hiring of veteran defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo. Speaking on The Jim Rome Show, Franklin highlighted Anarumo’s strong reputation around the league and the respect he commands from players.
“If you’re thinking about bringing a defensive player to help bolster our unit, first of all, Lou is a well-respected DC in this league,” Franklin said. “At the Pro Bowl, every single player I met who played against him or on the same team as him—offensive guys too, like [Joe] Mixon and Ja’Marr [Chase]—had extreme respect for Lou. They talked about his defensive mind and his ability to put players in positions to succeed.”
Anarumo, formerly with the Cincinnati Bengals, was let go after six seasons, but his coaching acumen remains widely respected. The struggles of the Bengals’ 2024 squad raised more questions about personnel than Anarumo’s effectiveness. Now, he takes over a Colts defense that finished 29th in yards allowed under Gus Bradley, yet still boasts significant talent.

A Strong Defensive Core
Despite last season’s struggles, the Colts’ defensive unit is loaded with playmakers. Franklin, who led the NFL with 173 tackles in his first Pro Bowl season, is one of several impact players. He pointed out the talent Indianapolis has at all three levels of defense, naming himself, DeForest Buckner, and Kenny Moore as key leaders.
“We’ve got Pro Bowlers and playmakers at all three levels,” Franklin said. “Add another dynamic playmaker to that mix—whether it’s in the secondary, D-line, or linebacker room—it’s only going to help us become an all-time unit.”
The addition of first-round pick Laiatu Latu and the presence of defensive tackle Grover Stewart further strengthen a core that could be even more dangerous under Anarumo’s leadership.

Shane Steichen’s Offense Still Has Potential
While the defense is a focal point, Franklin also has faith in Steichen’s offensive system. The Colts’ 2024 campaign was plagued by inconsistency, finishing with an 8-9 record. Quarterback Anthony Richardson’s development stalled, Jonathan Taylor’s usage raised questions, and a brutal Week 17 loss to the New York Giants put a damper on the season.
However, Steichen remains a respected offensive mind, and Franklin believes his scheme can still be a major draw for free agents.
“Offensively, Shane is a guy that players love playing for,” Franklin said. “Everybody who has played for him loves his scheme and how he gets guys the ball. We had three receivers with over 800 yards, and of course, shoutout to J.T. (Jonathan Taylor).”
Taylor returned to form in 2024, rushing for over 1,000 yards and earning another Pro Bowl nod—his first in two years. Additionally, Alec Pierce, Michael Pittman Jr., and Josh Downs each surpassed 800 receiving yards, providing evidence that the offense has a strong foundation moving forward.

The Road Ahead for Indianapolis
The upcoming season will be pivotal for Steichen, Ballard, and the Colts as they attempt to break a four-year playoff drought. Much of their success will hinge on whether Richardson can establish himself as the franchise quarterback. The team will also need to address key roster holes, particularly on the offensive line and at the center position, following the rescinded trade for Mark Williams.
Still, with an established defensive core, an offensive system that has shown promise, and a highly regarded coaching staff, Indianapolis has plenty to offer prospective free agents. As Franklin continues to advocate for his team, the Colts may be able to secure the missing pieces needed to turn them into a true contender.
