Djokovic Chooses His Successor: Alcaraz or Sinner?
With 24 Grand Slam titles, Novak Djokovic, the greatest male tennis player in history, has spoken about who might succeed him in dominating the sport.
Alcaraz or Sinner – Who Will Become Number One?
Although Jannik Sinner is currently at the top of the ATP rankings after an impressive victory at the 2024 Australian Open, his future remains uncertain due to a doping scandal. Sinner failed two doping tests in March last year and is awaiting the outcome of his appeal in mid-April. If he receives a severe penalty, he could face a long suspension from tennis, opening the door for Carlos Alcaraz to rise as the dominant force in men’s tennis.
In an interview with Vijesti, Djokovic shared his perspective on the race for the number one spot between Alcaraz and Sinner, comparing it to the decade-long rivalry between himself, Roger Federer, and Rafael Nadal.
“We are witnessing the emergence of a new rivalry between Alcaraz and Sinner,” Djokovic said. “Nadal, Federer, Murray, and I have dominated men’s tennis for the past 15 to 20 years. We set a very high standard, not only in terms of achievements but also in playing style, sportsmanship, and the way a champion represents this sport.”
Djokovic Places His Bet on Alcaraz
Djokovic specifically highlighted Alcaraz’s appeal and character.
“When it comes to charisma, Alcaraz truly stands out. He is not only impressive with his powerful game and remarkable achievements at such a young age, but he also displays great sportsmanship and treats everyone with respect. Even in defeat, Alcaraz maintains a smile, which is something that really impresses me. Despite his limited experience, he competes as if he has been on the ATP Tour for more than a decade.”

Djokovic believes that Alcaraz’s strong foundation comes from proper upbringing and a high-quality training environment.
“I think all of this is a result of strong guidance from his family and his coach, Juan Carlos Ferrero, a former world number one and Grand Slam champion. Ferrero has instilled in Alcaraz not only perseverance and a winning mentality but also the values and principles that a tennis player should uphold and pass on to future generations.”
With Alcaraz’s rapid rise, could men’s tennis have found its next great champion?
