Does Djokovic Still Care About His Ranking?

Novak Djokovic is facing the serious risk of dropping in the ATP rankings, which could impact his chances at Roland Garros 2025. But does the Serbian tennis superstar actually care about that?

Djokovic to Miss Two Months, Could Fall Out of ATP Top 8

After being forced to withdraw from the Australian Open 2025 semifinals due to a hamstring injury, Djokovic is set to endure a two-month break from competition. This means he will not participate in the Qatar Open at the end of February— a notable loss, especially considering his recent appointment as an ambassador for the tournament.

Additionally, the Serbian ace may also miss two crucial ATP Masters 1000 tournaments in MarchIndian Wells and Miami Open. While he doesn’t have many points to defend during this period, his absence from these tournaments could cost him his spot in the ATP Top 8, particularly with several strong competitors closing in.

Currently ranked No. 6 in the world, Djokovic could be overtaken by Daniil Medvedev (No. 7), Alex de Minaur (No. 8), and Tommy Paul (No. 9) if they continue their strong performances. De Minaur, in particular, has had an impressive 2025 season so far, and should he go deep at Rotterdam Open, Indian Wells, and Miami Open, he could push Djokovic out of the Top 8 before the clay season begins.

If that happens, Djokovic could face Jannik Sinner (World No. 1), Alexander Zverev (No. 2), or Carlos Alcaraz (No. 3) as early as the Round of 16 at Roland Garros 2025. This would make his path to a record-extending 25th Grand Slam title significantly more challenging.

Djokovic Has Always Found a Way to Overcome Challenges

Though Djokovic has stated that his ranking is no longer a primary concern at this stage of his career, falling out of the ATP Top 8 could negatively impact his chances of making a deep run at Roland Garros.

Moreover, his boos from the crowd when leaving the court injured during the Australian Open semifinal against Alexander Zverev sparked controversy. Former British No. 1 Tim Henman was quick to criticize the treatment Djokovic received from the Australian crowd:

“I think they were completely wrong. Here’s a man chasing his 11th Australian Open title and 25th Grand Slam, clearly dealing with a serious issue that forced him to withdraw. Booing him in that moment was unacceptable.”

Henman also questioned whether the adoration for Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal continues to impact how fans perceive Djokovic.

“Djokovic has always wanted to receive the same love from fans that Federer and Nadal did. Whether that’s true or not, I’m not sure, but that’s my perception.”

Djokovic and the Road to His 25th Grand Slam

While dropping in the rankings could put Djokovic at a disadvantage at Roland Garros 2025, it doesn’t mean he won’t contend for the title. Time and again, Nole has shown his ability to overcome adversity and remain at the top of the sport.

Crowd pressure, young challengers, and an ongoing battle with injuries may make his journey toward a historic 25th Grand Slam even more difficult. But with his skill, resilience, and experience, can Djokovic continue his dominance and add another chapter to his legendary career?
