Edgar Berlanga, inspired by his tough bout with Canelo Alvarez, is preparing for a major return in 2024, aiming for bigger challenges in Puerto Rico and beyond, with the goal of proving he’s a top contender in the super-middleweight division.

Edgar Berlanga has already seen the heights of boxing glory, walking the ring in front of a packed crowd and going toe-to-toe with one of the biggest names in the sport, Canelo Alvarez. But as Berlanga gears up for his upcoming return in 2024, the pressure to top that moment is real.
“That experience was incredible,” Berlanga shared Friday on ProBox TV’s “Top Stories” with host Garry Jonas. “If I could relive that, I’d do it over and over again. I made it to the top of the sport and proved what I’m capable of. Despite the talk, I performed under the spotlight. The sky’s the limit for me now.“
At 27 years old, the Brooklyn-born fighter, with a record of 22-1 (17 KOs), made a massive impact early in his career, racking up 16 straight knockouts. But his bout against Alvarez was a wake-up call, as the legendary Mexican champ dropped Berlanga in the third round, securing a unanimous decision victory. Despite the loss, Berlanga took pride in going the full 12 rounds against the pound-for-pound king, with Alvarez even telling him after the fight, “You’ll be a problem in this sport.”
Berlanga aims for big fights in Puerto Rico and beyond after his bout with Canelo.
Berlanga’s manager, Keith Connolly, recently told BoxingScene that they are working on a March fight in Puerto Rico, where Berlanga could headline a DAZN card. His opponent has yet to be announced, but it’s expected to be a step up from his recent challenges. Berlanga’s team is aiming for bigger names like Caleb Plant, Jermall Charlo, or Jaime Munguia for later in 2025.
With a renewed sense of confidence and eyes on the future, Berlanga is ready for the next chapter in his career—and with it, more chances to prove he’s a serious threat in the super-middleweight division.
