Fabio Wardley Strategically Plans 2025 and Identifies Ideal Opponent
Unbeaten heavyweight Fabio Wardley is gearing up for a pivotal year in his boxing career after recently climbing to the WBA’s number one spot. The rising star, who celebrated his 30th birthday in December, is aware that his ranking adds more pressure to prove himself in the ring.
Speaking to Boxing News, Wardley acknowledged the recognition but emphasized the need for continued growth. “It’s a nice nod, and I appreciate that my talents have been recognized,” he said. “But now there’s more on my shoulders to live up to.”
Proving His Worth in 2024
Wardley, with an impressive record of 18-0-1 (17 KOs), showcased his resilience in 2024 by going the full 12-round distance in his first clash with Frazer Clarke for the British title. Their brutal battle ended in a split draw, leaving Wardley eager for a decisive win. Seven months later, in a high-profile rematch on the Beterbiev-Bivol undercard in Riyadh, he delivered a stunning first-round knockout, cementing his place among the top contenders.
The 6’5″ heavyweight has proven his progression year after year, transitioning from a White Collar boxing background to a legitimate championship contender. “People used to doubt me, but my recent fights have shown that I’m a genuine contender,” Wardley explained. “I can take hits, go the distance, and execute various game plans.”
Staying Grounded Amid Success
Despite his rising fame, Wardley remains humble, crediting his family and team for keeping him grounded. “No one cares that I’m number one at home,” he joked. “My mum still makes me do the dishes after Christmas dinner, and my coach doesn’t cut me any slack in training.”
He also recognizes the unpredictable nature of boxing, stating, “One punch can change everything, so I stay realistic and prepared for tough fights.”
Strategic Moves for 2025
Looking ahead, Wardley understands that 2025 will require a strategic approach to his fights. His team plans to carefully assess potential opponents to ensure continued progression toward a world title shot. With discussions underway, Wardley has his sights set on high-profile opponents who can elevate his career further.
Among potential matchups, Wardley sees Kubrat Pulev as the “ideal” opponent due to his WBA ‘Regular’ title. “If I can make that fight happen, it would be the most ideal scenario,” he said. Other potential contenders include Jarrell Miller and Jermaine Franklin, but Wardley believes Pulev offers the best opportunity to solidify his title aspirations.
However, challenges remain as Pulev recently fought, and the WBA’s decision on mandatory challengers is yet to be determined.
Aiming for the Top
With heavyweights like Daniel Dubois, Martin Bakole, and Zhilei Zhang also in the mix, Wardley knows he must continue proving himself against world-class competition. As Oleksandr Usyk remains the top dog in the division, Wardley is ready to seize any opportunity that comes his way.
As he steps into the ring in 2025, Wardley is prepared to show the world why he deserves to be at the pinnacle of the heavyweight division.
