General Motors Joins F1 as an Engine Manufacturer with Cadillac Leading the Charge
General Motors (GM) has officially entered the world of Formula 1, registering as an engine manufacturer ahead of its planned participation. Backed by GM, Cadillac is set to make its mark in the championship starting in 2026. While the American brand won’t immediately produce its own engines, it has committed to evolving into a full-fledged factory team “by the end of the decade.”
Mark Reuss, President of GM, expressed excitement over this milestone, stating:
“We are thrilled to announce that the Cadillac Formula 1 Team will feature GM-powered engines. With our deep expertise in engineering and motorsports, we are confident in developing a competitive power unit that will pave the way for Cadillac to become a true F1 factory team. We are ready to compete with the best, at the highest level, with the passion and integrity to elevate the sport for fans worldwide.”
GM is currently testing and developing prototype engines as part of its preparation. The company emphasized its focus on leveraging advanced technology in a statement:
“Building an F1 power unit will enhance GM’s expertise in areas such as electrification, hybrid technology, sustainable fuels, high-performance internal combustion engines, advanced control systems, and software development.”
The project is supported by a team of skilled engineers with a strong track record. Cadillac, for instance, recently developed the advanced 5.5L DOHC V-8 power unit used in the World Endurance Championship, showcasing their capability to deliver at the highest level of motorsport.
Cadillac will also become the first new team to join F1 since 2016, further highlighting its significance. As an American brand, it brings a unique identity and perspective to the grid, potentially appealing to a growing fan base in the U.S. However, questions remain about how long Cadillac will operate as a customer team before it transitions to producing its own engines.
With its commitment to innovation and excellence, GM’s entry into Formula 1 marks an exciting chapter for the sport, as fans anticipate the emergence of Cadillac as a competitive force in the championship.
