The NFL Honors 2024 ceremony delivered unexpected moments, with Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen securing the prestigious Most Valuable Player (MVP) award over Lamar Jackson in a closely contested race. While Jackson was the favorite after earning first-team All-Pro honors, Allen’s leadership and record-breaking season helped him edge out the Ravens’ star. The night also celebrated standout performances across the league, highlighting elite talents like Saquon Barkley, Patrick Surtain II, and rising rookies.

Josh Allen’s MVP Victory: A Shocking but Deserved Win

Josh Allen made history as the first NFL MVP in 21 years to win without being named first-team All-Pro. The last players to achieve this were John Elway (1987) and Steve McNair (2003). Allen secured 27 first-place votes, narrowly beating Lamar Jackson’s 23 in one of the tightest MVP races ever.

Despite Jackson outperforming him in most statistical categories, Allen’s ability to carry the Bills to a 13-4 record despite losing star receivers Stefon Diggs and Gabe Davis made the difference. His 28 passing touchdowns, 12 rushing touchdowns, and only 6 interceptions set a historic benchmark, making him the first player in NFL history to record at least 25 passing TDs, 10 rushing TDs, and fewer than 10 interceptions in a single season.

During his acceptance speech, Allen humbly credited his team, saying, “This is an individual award, but it’s derived from team success, and I love my team.”

Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year

The Offensive Player of the Year award went to Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley, who dominated the season with over 2,000 rushing yards—just 100 yards shy of Eric Dickerson’s all-time record. His 142.7 rushing yards per game ranked among the highest in recent years, earning him 35 of 50 first-place votes.

On the defensive side, Denver Broncos cornerback Patrick Surtain II claimed Defensive Player of the Year honors, becoming the first cornerback in five years to win. His lockdown coverage allowed just 306 receiving yards and two touchdowns, making him one of the most dominant defenders of the season. He earned 26 first-place votes, surpassing Trey Hendrickson (11 votes) and Myles Garrett (5 votes).

Top Rookies Shine: Jayden Daniels and Jared Verse Earn Rookie Honors

Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels was named Offensive Rookie of the Year after leading his team to an impressive 12-5 record and an NFC Championship Game appearance. The No. 2 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft made history as the first rookie to throw for over 3,500 yards while rushing for over 800 yards in a single season. Daniels dominated the voting, receiving 49 of 50 first-place votes, with the only other vote going to Las Vegas Raiders tight end Brock Bowers.

On defense, Los Angeles Rams pass rusher Jared Verse earned defensive rookie of the year honors. The No. 19 pick led all rookies with 50 quarterback pressures and 18 QB hits, cementing himself as a rising star. His disruptive presence on the field helped him secure 37 first-place votes, outpacing Quinyon Mitchell (9 votes) and Braden Fiske (5 votes).
