Sacramento Kings head coach Mike Brown has been fined $35,000 by the NBA for aggressively pursuing a game official during the Kings’ loss to the Brooklyn Nets on Sunday, the league announced on Tuesday. This marks the second such fine for Brown in as many seasons, highlighting his ongoing frustration with officiating.

Mike Brown Confronts Referee Over Non-Call

The incident that led to the fine occurred in the second quarter of the Kings’ 108-103 defeat to the Brooklyn Nets. The play in question began when Colby Jones attempted a fast break layup, only to be blocked at the rim by Ben Simmons. Despite significant contact, no foul was called on the play, and Jones was left out of bounds on the floor.

As the Nets quickly transitioned to the other end of the court, Noah Clowney hit a three-pointer that pushed Brooklyn’s lead to 19 points. Frustrated by the non-call, Mike Brown immediately pursued referee Scott Twardoski, confronting him on the court. Brown’s actions earned him a technical foul, and he had to be physically restrained by players De’Aaron Fox, Malik Monk, and assistant coaches.

While Cam Thomas missed the technical free throw, much to the delight of Kings fans at Golden 1 Center, the Nets ultimately sealed the victory with a 108-103 win, thanks to Thomas’ game-high 34 points.

A Pattern of Aggressive Behavior: Brown’s Previous Fine and Criticism of Officiating

This is not the first time Mike Brown has been fined for his aggressive pursuit of officials. Last season, during a January 16 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks, Brown was fined $50,000 after confronting an official during the game and later publicly criticizing the referees in a postgame press conference. In that instance, he even brought a laptop to the presser to show clips of controversial calls he disagreed with.

Kings’ Struggles Continue Amid Losing Streak

As of now, the Sacramento Kings are struggling with an 8-10 record and are in the midst of a four-game losing streak. Despite the controversy surrounding Brown’s fine, the Kings will look to bounce back as they prepare to face the Minnesota Timberwolves on Wednesday.
