Major Update Shakes Up the Lions’ Bye Week—Injury News Brings Unexpected Hope
The Detroit Lions head into their NFL playoff bye week with a mix of encouraging and concerning injury news. Key players, including rookie cornerback Terrion Arnold, guard Kevin Zeitler, and defensive lineman Pat O’Connor, left Sunday night’s game against the Minnesota Vikings due to injuries. However, head coach Dan Campbell shared updates on Tuesday, offering hope for the Lions’ postseason prospects.
Positive Updates for Arnold and Zeitler
Coach Campbell had good news regarding Arnold and Zeitler, two vital contributors to the team’s success.
“I can’t guarantee that they’re playing, but it’s much better than it appeared to be when the injuries happened. It’s positive news,” Campbell told reporters.
Arnold sustained a foot injury in the third quarter, but X-rays conducted after the game came back negative. He was seen wearing a walking boot on his right foot in the locker room, suggesting a precautionary measure rather than a severe setback.
Zeitler, on the other hand, pulled a hamstring during the final possession of the game. While the injury will require monitoring, Campbell’s optimistic tone suggests a potential return for the playoff game.
Concerns for O’Connor
The outlook for defensive lineman Pat O’Connor is less promising. O’Connor, who has been playing a larger role in the absence of Alim McNeill, injured his calf during the game.
“O’Connor is not as positive,” Campbell admitted, hinting that his recovery might take longer than initially hoped.
Montgomery and Rakestraw Trending Toward Returns
The Lions received more good news with the potential return of running back David Montgomery. Montgomery, who suffered a knee injury in Week 15, was initially thought to be out for the season. However, Campbell confirmed that he’s making significant progress through physical therapy and is expected to be ready for the playoffs.
Rookie cornerback Ennis Rakestraw, sidelined since Week 12 due to a hamstring injury, is also showing signs of improvement. “He’s trending the right way,” Campbell said, leaving the door open for his return during the postseason.
Postseason Absences Confirmed
Unfortunately, not all updates were positive. Linebacker Derrick Barnes and cornerback Carlton Davis III have been ruled out for the postseason.
“They’re doing great, [but] I don’t see them coming back at all,” Campbell said.
Barnes suffered a torn MCL and PCL in Week 3, while Davis fractured his jaw in Week 15. Despite their progress in recovery, neither player is expected to suit up for the Lions during their playoff run.
A Glimmer of Hope for Aidan Hutchinson
Edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson, who broke his tibia and fibula during an October 13 win over the Dallas Cowboys, remains an inspiring presence in the locker room. Hutchinson has been recovering from surgery but has maintained an active role with the team, even appearing on the sideline during Sunday’s victory over the Vikings.
“I’m going to say it again: he has a season-ending injury, but if anybody can come back from this, it would be Aidan. That’s the best way to say it,” Campbell remarked.
Hutchinson himself has fueled speculation of a miraculous return, posting on social media about his determination to be back in time for the Super Bowl on February 9.
Light Practices and Rest Ahead
With their bye week offering a chance to regroup, Campbell is taking a measured approach to preparation. The team will hold a light practice on Thursday before players and coaches enjoy a three-day weekend.
The Lions’ playoff aspirations remain high, and the updates on key players suggest that Detroit could be in a strong position to make a deep postseason run. For fans, the hope is that the team’s resilience and depth will continue to shine as they march toward the Super Bowl.
