Maple Leafs’ Matt Murray Reflects on First NHL Game in Over 600 Days

Matt Murray, goaltender for the Toronto Maple Leafs, made his long-awaited return to the NHL, playing his first game in 638 days. Murray’s last appearance had been in April 2023, when an injury during a game against the Detroit Red Wings sidelined him for an extended period.

In his triumphant return, Murray recorded 25 saves, leading the Leafs to victory over the Buffalo Sabres, handing Buffalo their 13th consecutive loss. After the game, Murray expressed his emotions about the milestone. “A long road. A big mountain to climb. But I kept this moment in the front of my mind on the days it felt tough,” Murray told The New York Times. “A big release, a rush of emotions.”

He went on to share his gratitude: “I was able to take a moment in warmups and during the anthem to look around and appreciate the long journey that it’s been, and think of all the people who helped me get here.”

A Rollercoaster Career and Road to Recovery

Murray’s NHL journey has been one of significant highs and challenging lows. He first rose to prominence with the Pittsburgh Penguins, where he played a crucial role in the team’s back-to-back Stanley Cup victories in 2016 and 2017. His stellar performance led to his being named the heir-apparent to Penguins legend Marc-Andre Fleury, who left for the Vegas Golden Knights during the 2017 NHL Expansion Draft.

However, Murray struggled to replicate his playoff success in subsequent seasons. His career was marred by injuries and inconsistency, which led the Penguins to trade him to the Ottawa Senators as a pending restricted free agent. Murray signed a four-year contract with the Senators but continued to face challenges on the ice and with his health.

Joining the Maple Leafs

In July 2022, the Maple Leafs acquired Murray in a trade with the Senators, hoping he could form a strong tandem with Ilya Samsonov. Unfortunately, injuries once again plagued Murray during his first season in Toronto. Despite these setbacks, the Maple Leafs re-signed him to a one-year contract in the offseason, signaling their faith in his ability to contribute when healthy.

Return and Immediate Impact

Murray’s performance against Buffalo was a testament to his perseverance and resilience. His ability to step up and secure a win in his first game back is a reminder of the talent that made him a standout during his early years in the league.

While the Leafs couldn’t maintain the momentum in their next game, falling 6-3 to the New York Islanders with Joseph Woll in goal, Murray’s return provides a boost of confidence for the team as they navigate the season.

As Murray continues to rebuild his career with the Maple Leafs, his focus will undoubtedly remain on staying healthy and consistent. His experience as a two-time Stanley Cup champion could prove invaluable for Toronto as they aim for postseason success.

The journey back to the NHL spotlight hasn’t been easy, but Murray’s dedication and determination have paid off. Fans and teammates alike will be watching to see how he builds on this inspiring comeback.
