Max Verstappen Silences Zak Brown’s Criticism with a Championship Win
Max Verstappen clinched his fourth consecutive Drivers’ Championship title at the 2024 Las Vegas Grand Prix, finishing fifth under the neon lights to secure an insurmountable 63-point lead over Lando Norris.
But the victory wasn’t just about the title. Verstappen delivered a sharp rebuttal to Zak Brown, McLaren CEO, who previously claimed Verstappen could only win because of Red Bull’s dominant car.
Brown’s Comments Come Back to Haunt Him
Earlier in the season, Brown stated that at least “six or seven drivers” could win the championship in Verstappen’s Red Bull.
“As great as Max is, and he’s one of the best ever, I don’t think Max wins the World Championship today in any other car other than the Red Bull,” Brown said on the Beyond the Grid podcast.
Fast forward to the Las Vegas GP, and Verstappen didn’t let the remark slide. During a live TV moment, Brown interrupted an interview to congratulate the Dutchman, saying, “You earned it.”
Verstappen quipped back with a smile:
“And like you said, before I could only win it in the fastest car. This year has been a little bit different.”
Brown laughed off the playful jab, replying, “Well done, well done,” before walking off.
Verstappen’s Resilience Amid Criticism
Despite early criticism, Verstappen proved his mettle in a challenging season where Red Bull wasn’t always the fastest car. Speaking to Dutch media, he addressed the doubters:
“Things like that only motivate me. If people are critical and think I can only win in the best car, I prove them wrong.”
When asked if he could’ve won in a McLaren or Ferrari, Verstappen confidently stated:
- McLaren: “Yes, even earlier.”
- Ferrari: “Pretty much the same, I think.”
- Mercedes: “No, that would have been a bit more difficult.”
Overcoming Adversity
The season wasn’t without its challenges. Verstappen faced controversies, including speculation about a move to Mercedes and ongoing scrutiny of Christian Horner and Red Bull. Yet, according to Horner, Verstappen’s ability to remain focused was crucial:
“He hasn’t been distracted; he’s just got in and got on with the job. In adversity, this team and Max have shown resilience and focus.”
What’s Next for Verstappen and Red Bull?
With his fourth title secured, Verstappen and Red Bull are already looking to improve for the 2025 season. As Horner put it:
“There are areas we need to improve for next year. The team’s focus is now on building on this success for consecutive championships.”
Verstappen Proves Critics Wrong
Max Verstappen’s 2024 season is a testament to his skill and determination, silencing critics like Zak Brown who doubted his abilities. By winning in a season where Red Bull wasn’t consistently dominant, Verstappen has cemented his legacy as one of the sport’s greats.
