Novak Djokovic, Boris Becker, and Billie Jean King Pay Tribute to Simona Halep After Her Retirement

Simona Halep has officially ended her illustrious tennis career, receiving heartfelt tributes from legends like Novak Djokovic, Boris Becker, and Billie Jean King.

At 33 years old, the Romanian star played her final professional match on home soil at the Transylvania Open in Cluj-Napoca. She faced Lucia Bronzetti in the first round of the WTA 250 event, losing 6-1, 6-1. Following the match, Halep made an emotional retirement announcement on the court.

Halep Reflects on Her Decision to Retire

“Tonight, I don’t know whether to feel happy or sad—maybe both emotions are overwhelming me. But I am making this decision from my heart. I have always been realistic with myself and my body.”

The two-time Grand Slam champion and former World No. 1 shared how difficult it was to return to peak performance and how she wanted to bid farewell in front of her home crowd:

“It is difficult to return to where I once was, and I understand what that means. That’s why I wanted to be here in Cluj, playing in front of all of you, to say goodbye.”

Even though her final performance didn’t match her past dominance, Halep expressed gratitude toward her fans:

“Even though my performance wasn’t great, this is still my heart and soul. I’m happy you are all here. I wonder if I will come back, but for now, this is the last time I will play here.”

A Legacy to Be Remembered

Looking back at her remarkable career, Halep acknowledged her incredible achievements:

“I became World No. 1, I won Grand Slams—that was all I ever wanted. But life moves on. There is life beyond tennis, and I hope we will meet again.”

Simona Halep’s retirement marks the end of an era, leaving fans and fellow players reflecting on the incredible legacy she leaves behind. While she may no longer be competing, her impact on the sport will continue to inspire generations to come.
