Novak Djokovic Cannot Recall How Many Titles He Has Won
Novak Djokovic admitted he couldn’t recall the total number of Grand Slam singles matches he has played since the beginning of his career, until he broke Roger Federer’s record of 429 matches at the Australian Open 2025.
“To be honest, I never thought I would hold this record, so I was quite surprised. But it’s exciting,” Djokovic shared after defeating Jaime Faria in the second round, a victory that marked his record-breaking 430th Grand Slam singles match.
Outstanding achievements in Grand Slam history
Djokovic now holds the record for the most Grand Slam singles matches played, surpassing Federer and Serena Williams, who ranks third with 423 matches. The legendary American player sits far ahead of Rafael Nadal in fourth place, who has 358 matches.
In addition to his record-breaking match count, Djokovic also holds several other significant milestones in tennis, including:
- 24 Grand Slam titles, the most in history.
- Seven ATP Finals championships.
- 428 weeks as world number one, far surpassing Federer’s previous record of 310 weeks.
Djokovic is aiming for his 25th Grand Slam title, which would surpass Margaret Court’s record to become the outright leader. He said: “I hope to win more Grand Slam titles. I’m happy with the numbers I’ve achieved, but the most important thing is to focus on the next match or tournament. For me, this journey is far from over.”
A challenging start at the Australian Open 2025
Djokovic lost a set in each of his first two rounds, facing young, lesser-known opponents. In the third round, he will face a tougher competitor, Tomas Machac, who defeated Djokovic in the semifinals of the Geneva Open last year.
Djokovic has also benefited from the guidance of his close friend Andy Murray, who has taken on the role of his coach. “Having Murray around has been very helpful,” Djokovic noted. “So far, we haven’t had any disagreements. It’s still early to judge the impact, but having him in my corner adds tremendous value. He’s sharing as much of his experience as possible.”
The journey ahead in this year’s tournament
Djokovic has won all 10 Australian Open finals he has contested. However, last year, he was defeated by Jannik Sinner in the semifinals, leading to a lackluster season with no ATP Tour titles.
This year, Djokovic’s draw positions him for potential matches against Carlos Alcaraz in the quarterfinals, Alexander Zverev in the semifinals, and a possible rematch with Sinner in the final. With steady performance and Murray’s support, Djokovic has a strong chance of securing his 11th Australian Open title.
