Novak Djokovic Faces Double Blow at Qatar Open Amid New Revelations About Jannik Sinner’s Case

What’s Next for Djokovic After Qatar Open?
Novak Djokovic endured a brutal 24 hours at the ATP Qatar Open 2025, suffering two consecutive defeats in both singles and doubles competition. His shock loss to Matteo Berrettini was followed by another setback in the doubles event, marking a tournament to forget for the Serbian legend.

Djokovic Eliminated in Both Singles and Doubles
Djokovic returned to the ATP 500 event in Doha hoping to find his rhythm after missing significant time due to injury. His last tournament appearance was at the Australian Open, where he was forced to retire from the semifinals due to a hamstring tear. However, his much-anticipated comeback did not go as planned.
The former world No. 1 and two-time Qatar Open champion suffered a 7-6, 6-2 defeat at the hands of Matteo Berrettini, marking the first time in his career that the Italian had beaten him after losing all five of their previous encounters.

As if that wasn’t enough, Djokovic faced another disappointment just a day later, this time in the doubles tournament. Partnering with Fernando Verdasco, Djokovic was hoping to help his Spanish counterpart close out his professional career on a high note. However, the duo was knocked out in the quarterfinals by the second-seeded pair of Henry Patten and Harri Heliövaara, losing 7-5, 6-4.
With back-to-back defeats in both singles and doubles, Djokovic’s return to competitive tennis has raised serious questions about his form and physical condition heading into the rest of the season.
Djokovic Responds to His Recent Struggles
Following his early exits, Djokovic addressed the concerns regarding his fitness, insisting that his hamstring was no longer an issue. Instead, he admitted that he was simply outplayed in both matches:
“I didn’t feel any pain or discomfort. I was simply beaten by a better player today,” Djokovic said after his singles loss to Berrettini. “I am not at the level I want to be, and maybe I wasn’t moving the way I would like, but I played without pain, so there is no excuse. He was just the better player. I think he played at an extremely high level, to be honest.”
Despite maintaining a calm demeanor, Djokovic’s consecutive losses suggest that he still has a long road ahead before regaining his peak form.
Djokovic’s Controversial Comments on Jannik Sinner’s Doping Case
Adding to his challenging week, Djokovic has found himself at the center of a controversy after criticizing the handling of Jannik Sinner’s doping case.
Sinner, the current world No. 1, was handed a three-month ban after testing positive for the banned steroid Clostebol in March 2023. However, the Italian was not immediately suspended, and his punishment was only finalized after he reached an agreement with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).
Djokovic did not hold back in his criticism, questioning whether top players receive preferential treatment in doping cases:
“This is certainly not a good image for our sport. Most of the players I have spoken to in the locker room—not just in the past few days but in the past few months—are unhappy with the way this entire process has been handled.”
“Most players don’t feel that it’s fair. Most players feel that there is bias at play. And it seems like if you’re a top player, if you have access to the best lawyers, then you can almost influence the outcome.”
His comments have ignited a heated debate in the tennis community. Is Djokovic implying that Sinner was given special treatment because of his status as a top-ranked player?
WADA Responds with New Details About Sinner’s Case
In response to the growing backlash, WADA’s chief legal counsel, Ross Wenzel, provided new insights into why Sinner received only a three-month ban.
Wenzel revealed that a detailed scientific investigation was conducted, concluding that Sinner’s two positive tests were not consistent with intentional doping. He explained:
“We have thoroughly examined the facts from start to finish, and the results show no evidence that Sinner intentionally used performance-enhancing drugs. Additionally, all of his drug tests in the previous 12 months came back clean.”
“There was a scientifically verified explanation for how the banned substance entered his system. His physiotherapist applied a spray to his own finger, which was later transferred to Sinner’s skin during a massage. Furthermore, WADA consulted multiple experts who all reached the same conclusion: Sinner’s test results were entirely inconsistent with intentional doping, even in microdoses.”
Wenzel also revealed a previously undisclosed fact about the case:
“All samples collected from Sinner in the 12 months prior to his positive tests in March were re-examined. The goal was to search for any other signs of the banned substance in his system.”
“The results showed absolutely nothing. Regardless of what people may think about this case, it is clear that this was not a case of intentional doping or wrongdoing. That is a fact that must be understood.”
WADA’s explanation may help clarify the situation, but it does not erase the doubts and suspicions that have arisen from the case. The controversy has only fueled broader concerns about transparency in the sport’s anti-doping protocols.
