Novak Djokovic Was Absent from Rafael Nadal’s Retirement Ceremony
Novak Djokovic revealed the reason why Rafael Nadal was spotted with a Pikachu bag at the Australian Open in Melbourne. Initially, Djokovic planned to attend Nadal’s farewell ceremony, but Spain’s unexpected loss to the Netherlands in the Davis Cup quarterfinals disrupted the plans, surprising even the organizers in Malaga.
A Farewell Ceremony Below Expectations
Many have criticized the farewell ceremony for being unworthy of one of the greatest tennis players of all time. Djokovic agreed, stating that the ceremony could have been handled better. He shared:
“I don’t know the exact details of how they envisioned the ceremony, but I know the plan was to hold it after the semifinals, assuming Spain advanced. Murray and I planned to attend, but we couldn’t arrange our schedules for the quarterfinals. However, we would have definitely been there for the semifinals.”
Djokovic expressed his regret, saying:
“Unfortunately, things didn’t go as planned. What can you do? I really don’t know,” he told the Serbian press before adding:
“I saw the video of the ceremony. I’m not sure if Rafa wanted to keep things simple to avoid disrupting the other teams or matches. Honestly, I felt bad for not being there.”
Sharing Special Moments with Nadal
Djokovic highlighted the significance of sharing the court with Nadal in the final year of the Spaniard’s career:
“We played together in Riyadh, and it was a great moment. I saw him compete at Roland Garros, and we faced off at the Olympics. If you ask me, the farewell ceremony could have been more grand. Perhaps Rafa himself was uncertain about whether he would continue playing, and by the time things became clearer, it might have been too late to plan something bigger.”
The Secret Behind the Pikachu Bag
Another point of intrigue was the Pikachu bag Djokovic carried at the Australian Open. Fans familiar with the Pokémon universe know that Pikachu’s Pokedex number is 25, symbolizing Djokovic’s pursuit of his 25th Grand Slam title.
In 2023, Djokovic surprised fans by tapping his forehead 22 times after his victory against Sebastian Korda in the Adelaide final. He later went on to secure his 22nd Grand Slam title in Melbourne.
Djokovic humorously explained:
“Yes, I found it funny and interesting, and I enjoyed it a lot. Honestly, I didn’t plan it. Maybe it’s God’s intention, like the 22 taps in Adelaide… I didn’t do it consciously, at least not deliberately. Perhaps it was on some subconscious level. Regardless of the symbolism, I hope it happens – the 25th Grand Slam title.”
