A Stellar Season for the Wisconsin Volleyball Team

The Wisconsin volleyball team celebrated a successful 2024 season with its annual banquet at Union South. The event provided an opportunity for players to reflect on their journey while recognizing exceptional contributions from team members. Two major awards were given to standout players whose efforts and talent shone throughout the season.

The Bring It 2024 Award

Head coach Kelly Sheffield announced Julia Orzol as the recipient of the prestigious Bring It 2024 Award. This top honour recognizes athletes who excel not just in performance but also in their commitment to daily practices and games. Orzol’s relentless training and outstanding leadership played a key role in fostering a positive environment among her teammates, regardless of victories or challenges.

Julia Orzol’s Special Journey

In 2023, Julia Orzol transitioned from an outside hitter to a libero for the season. By 2024, she returned to her role as an outside hitter while also serving as team captain. Standing tall at 6 feet, Orzol impressed with her skills, earning a spot on the All-Big Ten Second Team, mirroring her 2022 achievement. She ranked third on the team with an average of 2.07 kills per set and led the team with 40 service aces.

Orzol’s Remarkable Achievements

Orzol delivered five double-doubles this season, highlighted by a career-high hitting percentage of.684  against Milwaukee. On September 21, she set a personal best with 15 kills against Texas A&M. These milestones showcased her exceptional skills and determination to continually improve.

Academic Excellence

Beyond the court, Julia Orzol excelled academically, earning recognition from the College Sports Communicators (CSC) as an Academic All-American. She became a two-time Academic All-American, only the second player in program history to achieve this distinction. With a 3.94 GPA in Business: Accounting, Orzol has now signed a professional contract with LOTTO Chemik Police in Poland, embarking on an exciting new chapter in her career.

Charlie Fuerbringer: Most Improved Player

Freshman Charlie Fuerbringer also had an impressive debut season, earning the title of Most Improved Player. Fueled by determination, Fuerbringer consistently advanced in his game. His efforts were recognized as he made the AVCA All-America Third Team and won the AVCA North Region Freshman of the Year award.

Fuerbringer’s Impressive Statistics

A California native, Fuerbringer delivered a total of 1,270 assists, the fifth-highest total for a freshman in program history. With an average of 10.95 assists per set, he demonstrated leadership on the court while also contributing 0.54 kills, 2.37 digs, and 0.59 blocks per set, highlighting his versatility.

Big Ten Accolades

Fuerbringer earned multiple Big Ten weekly honours, including Big Ten Freshman of the Week on October 6 and November 18, as well as Big Ten Player of the Week on November 11. These achievements underscored his exceptional talent and rapid growth during his inaugural season.

Badgers: A Season of Excellence

The Wisconsin Badgers finished the 2024 season with a 26-7 record, advancing to the NCAA Regional Semifinals for the eighth consecutive year. This marked the 12th straight season the team reached at least the Sweet 16, showcasing its stability and progress under Coach Kelly Sheffield’s leadership.

Ranked Among the Nation’s Best

The Badgers concluded the year ranked seventh in the AVCA Coaches Poll, staying within the Top 10 in 11 of the past 13 seasons. This consistent recognition highlights the team’s hard work and dedication. With remarkable achievements in 2024, the Wisconsin volleyball team is poised for a bright future.
