Teoscar Hernández Reveals Shocking Secrets About Shohei Ohtani El Chino And The Story No One Expected
The friendship between Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Teoscar Hernández and designated hitter Shohei Ohtani didn’t start in the locker room but on opposing teams. Even as competitors, their camaraderie began to form.
“When we played against each other, for some reason, he always greeted me, and I greeted him,” Hernández shared during an interview with Grandes de las Deportes. “Out of nowhere, we started talking a lot. He would come to my office, ask me how I was, and I would do the same.”
Spring Training Sparks a Bond
This budding connection flourished during spring training, where Hernández introduced Ohtani to Spanish. The duo’s shared experiences deepened their bond when they both joined the Dodgers last offseason.
“We tried to create a relationship, especially because we were both new on the team,” Hernández said. “At that time, we felt a little more isolated, so we found comfort in each other.”
A Lighthearted Nickname: ‘El Chino’
Hernández recounted a hilarious nickname he gave Ohtani: “El Chino.” The story stemmed from playful banter with Japanese teammates and translators.
“I told Ohtani, ‘Look, I’m Chinese Dominican, you’re Japanese, and we get along great!’” Hernández joked. This lighthearted humor has become a running gag, showcasing the playful side of their friendship.
Dynamic Duo on and off the Field
Ohtani, a once-in-a-generation talent, excels as both a pitcher and a hitter. Meanwhile, Hernández’s offensive skills shone during the postseason, contributing three home runs and driving in 12 runs. Beyond their athletic feats, the duo brings a contagious energy to the Dodgers’ clubhouse, uplifting the team dynamic.
Breaking Language Barriers
One of the unique aspects of their friendship is their communication. Both players converse in English, a second language for both.
“He understands a lot of English, and I understand a lot of English,” Hernández explained. “Sometimes I say something, and he doesn’t get it right away, so I have to explain it the way I know. But I think that’s part of our job—to get to know each other, help each other, and learn together.”
A Universal Language: Baseball
Despite language barriers, the pair proves that baseball is a universal language. Their mutual support, humor, and camaraderie ensure the Dodgers remain a team in high spirits. As long as Hernández and Ohtani are in the lineup, fans can expect electrifying performances and unforgettable moments both on and off the field.
