Vesida Women’s Volleyball Team Makes Major Impact in Local Community
The Vesida women’s volleyball team made a major splash at the Extra Supermarket Central Community Games over the weekend, defeating Vunivivi Hills 15-9 in a thrilling final. This victory marked a significant milestone for the team, which has quickly become a prominent force in the local sports scene. The team’s performance not only showcases their skill but also reflects their broader mission to engage and uplift the youth in the Vesida community.
Vesida Volleyball Team’s Rise to Success
Vesida’s women’s volleyball team, formed last year under the Mid Central Volleyball Association, joined the Nasinu Volleyball Association this season with the aim of revitalizing a once-dominant team that had been dormant for over a decade. Head coach Maika Kini expressed that this move was vital for rebuilding the team’s legacy and expanding its impact.
“By joining Nasinu, we’ve had the opportunity to reinvigorate a team that once brought pride to our community,” Kini said. The team’s success this weekend is a direct result of their hard work and dedication to making a lasting mark in local sports.
A Community-Focused Vision
Vesida is located four miles from Suva and is dedicated to using sports as a tool to keep the youth engaged and away from criminal activities. Through volleyball and other sports, the team aims to provide the youth with opportunities that extend beyond the court.
“The goal is to not only help young people develop skills in sports but also to open doors to future employment opportunities,” explained Kini. The team’s broader mission is to tackle unemployment and provide local youth with pathways to success.

Collaborations with the community police, the Ministry of Youth and Sports, and the Fiji Sports Council have been integral in achieving the team’s goals. In addition to volleyball, the Vesida team has expanded its facilities to include other sports such as netball, rugby, badminton, and futsal.
