Why Is Novak Djokovic Both Loved and Hated?
Is his effort to challenge the dominance of “Fedal” (Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal) the primary reason behind all the hate? This debate continues to fuel controversy. Most recently, at the Australian Open (AO) 2025, Djokovic found himself in yet another contentious moment, adding to his long history of polarizing encounters.
A Love-Hate Relationship with Australian Fans
Djokovic has long had a complicated relationship with Australian crowds, and it frequently plays out during his matches. Last year, a fan accused a family of mocking her simply because she was supporting Djokovic at a match during the AO. This year, during his match against Tomas Machac, a “drunken heckler” caused some disruptions. Despite handling the situation with composure and even addressing the heckler during his post-match interview, such moments have become almost a staple in Djokovic’s matches.
No Match Without Controversy
It seems that a controversy-free match is almost unheard of for Novak Djokovic. Even outside the court, there have been countless instances where he has faced criticism. Recently, athlete and podcast host Josh Mansour shared a video clip promoting Dabble’s new feature called “Pick Em.” In the video, Mansour asked fans to choose between two tennis legends: “Who would you pick at their peak, Djokovic or Nadal?”
When the question was posed, fans were divided. Some chose Djokovic, while others picked Rafael Nadal. Mansour then asked a fan who had chosen Nadal: “Why Nadal?” The response was startling: “Because everyone hates Djokovic.”
Tony Jones Adds Fuel to the Fire
Adding to the controversy, Australian broadcaster Tony Jones recently sparked outrage with his sarcastic comments about Djokovic. His remarks have only further stoked the flames of criticism surrounding the tennis legend.
Djokovic’s journey continues to be one of greatness, perseverance, and debate. While his achievements on the court are undeniable, the polarizing opinions surrounding him make him one of the most fascinating figures in the history of tennis
