Wisconsin Volleyball Star Makes Shocking Move Following Crushing NCAA Exit
The Wisconsin Badgers came agonizingly close to clinching NCAA glory this season. Yet, their journey ended abruptly in the regional final, cutting short what could have been a historic run. With a 26-7 record for the 2024 season, the team faced a wave of disappointment. Adding to the somber atmosphere, a key defensive player has announced her departure from the program.
Gülce Guctekin Shakes Things Up with Transfer to Tennessee
In a surprising turn of events, Gülce Guctekin, the former defensive specialist for Wisconsin volleyball, has revealed her decision to transfer to the University of Tennessee for her final year of eligibility. Expressing excitement about this new chapter, she wrote, “I am thrilled and excited to announce that I will be joining the University of Tennessee volleyball program. As I begin this new chapter, I am committed to giving my all both on the court and in the classroom.”
Despite moving on, Guctekin remains deeply appreciative of her time with Wisconsin. She acknowledged the foundation it provided, stating, “I am incredibly grateful to my family, friends, and coaches who have supported me throughout my journey. I look forward to working with my new teammates and becoming a part of the Tennessee family.”
This move is bound to bolster the Lady Vols’ defense, potentially elevating it to new heights. Already boasting talent like sophomore defensive specialist Mackenzie Plante, Tennessee has been striving to close gaps in their blocking defense. Coach Eve Rackham Watt noted the challenge back in October, saying, “It feels like we’re always talking about how our blocking defense needs to improve.” With Guctekin in their lineup, Tennessee might finally address these shortcomings.
Guctekin Stellar Wisconsin Legacy
Over three seasons, Guctekin appeared in 69 matches for Wisconsin, averaging 2.1 digs and 0.38 assists this season. Known primarily as a defensive specialist, her most significant impact came during her freshman year when she served as the libero. That season, she played a crucial role in securing a Big Ten championship and leading the Badgers to the NCAA Regional Final.
This year, despite another regional final appearance, the Badgers were dealt a crushing blow by their fierce rivals, the Nebraska Huskers. Guctekin departure marks the end of an era, leaving Wisconsin with questions about how to fill the void she leaves behind.
The Huskers’ Dominance Over the Badgers
The Huskers and Badgers have long been bitter rivals, but this season saw Nebraska completely outplay Wisconsin. The Badgers faced Nebraska three times throughout the season and lost all three matches. Perhaps most disheartening was their performance in the regional final, where the Badgers hit an abysmal .126 attack percentage, one of their lowest of the season.
For context, Nebraska had previously held Wisconsin to a .094 hitting percentage during a November 1 clash. The Huskers’ defensive prowess left the Badgers struggling, even with 8,743 fans in attendance and a national audience of 798,000 tuning in on ABC.
The season’s repeated losses to Nebraska highlighted glaring weaknesses for Wisconsin, leading players like Guctekin and Saige Damrow to seek fresh starts elsewhere.
What Lies Ahead for Wisconsin and Guctekin
As Wisconsin Volleyball looks to regroup, they face the daunting task of filling the gaps left by players like Guctekin. Meanwhile, her arrival in Tennessee could be the spark the Lady Vols need to dominate defensively.
