UST Women’s Volleyball Team

The UST Golden Tigresses women’s volleyball team is one of the most prestigious teams in the UAAP (University Athletic Association of the Philippines), known for its strong legacy and impressive performances throughout the seasons. With high expectations every year, the team always aims to deliver outstanding performances. However, Season 87 has presented several challenges, particularly with the absence of key players, significantly affecting their roster and strategy.

Xyza Gula’s Injury Update

Recently, UST announced that Xyza Gula will be unable to participate in UAAP Season 87 due to a back injury. This unfortunate news comes as another setback for the team, especially following Jonna Perdido’s withdrawal due to health issues. The absence of these two crucial players poses significant difficulties for UST as they prepare for the upcoming season, leaving the coaching staff to reconsider their game plan.

Cause of the Injury

According to team reports, Gula sustained the injury in December last year when she suffered a severe fall on her back, resulting in a fractured coccyx. This injury has not only hindered her ability to play but has also left the team struggling to find a suitable replacement. Despite their efforts to keep Gula in their plans for the season, her condition has not allowed her to recover in time.

In an official statement, UST shared that, “With the team physician’s advice that the pain would subside within 5-8 weeks, she was initially included in UST’s Season 87 plans, including a training camp in Japan in January.”

Decision to Exclude Xyza Gula from the Roster

Given these circumstances, UST has officially decided to remove Gula from their UAAP Season 87 roster. Although this decision was difficult, it was made with her health and recovery as the top priority. The team emphasized that her well-being is far more important than competing for the championship.

In a heartfelt message to their supporters, UST stated: “We ask the loyal UST community to pray for our beloved Xyza’s recovery, as well as the health and safety of all our Tigresses and every athlete participating in the UAAP men’s and women’s volleyball tournaments.” This statement highlights the unity and deep concern for the well-being of athletes within the UST community.

UST’s Situation After Gula’s Absence

With both Xyza Gula and Jonna Perdido out, UST faces a major challenge in maintaining their competitive strength. However, the team still boasts key players like Angge Poyos, last season’s standout rookie, and veteran libero Detdet Pepito. They will be instrumental in leading the team’s efforts to keep UST’s championship hopes alive in UAAP Season 87, showcasing their resilience in the face of adversity.

Angge Poyos: The Future of UST

Ange Poyos, with her exceptional talent and experience from last season, is expected to play a crucial role for UST. Having already proven her capabilities, she is anticipated to shine once again in the upcoming season. The added responsibility on Poyos and other players will be a significant test but also an opportunity for growth as they step up to fill the gaps left by their absent teammates.

Detdet Pepito: Experience and Skill

Veteran libero Detdet Pepito will play a key role in the team’s strategy and support system. Her experience will be vital in maintaining team stability. Not only is she an outstanding player, but she also serves as a leader in the locker room, motivating her teammates throughout the season. Pepito’s guidance will be essential as the team navigates the challenges ahead.

The Importance of Fan Support

Fan support plays a crucial role in the team’s journey. The encouragement from the UST community not only boosts the players’ morale but also fuels their drive to perform at their best. The team hopes that fans will continue to stand by them throughout the season, despite the challenges ahead, as their support can inspire the athletes to give their all in every match.

A New Beginning for UST Golden Tigresses

UAAP Season 87 marks a fresh start for the UST Golden Tigresses, even as they face numerous obstacles. While the absence of Xyza Gula and Jonna Perdido leaves a significant gap, it also presents an opportunity for other players to step up. The team remains committed to giving their all for UST, striving for victory while creating unforgettable moments for their supporters. The road ahead is tough, but with determination and unity, the UST Golden Tigresses are ready to rise above adversity and shine on the court.
